The voice and comical lyrics of Randy Newman are familiar to all adults especially those with children due to the “Toy Story” movies. Might even be familiar to “Monk” the TV show fans. Mr Newman’s unique story telling through song and music continues to educate the masses with his new album. Much to our delight Randy brings the story telling to the blues with a song highlighting the musical genius of SoneyBoy
Mr Newman’s unique story telling through song and music continues to educate the masses with his new album “Dark Matter”. Much to our delight, Mr Newman brings the story telling to the blues with a song called “SoneyBoy”.
“Sonny Boy” tells the story of Sonny Boy Williamson, a blues harmonica pioneer whose name and likeness was used by another man (later called Sonny Boy Williamson II to differentiate) so he might gain a little (or a lot) of fame and opportunities by using an already well-known name. As usual, Newman takes the characters of the world and puts them under the lens of his original brand of comedic genius, plus the bluesy goodness of his songwriting talent and wit.
Dark Matter is out this Friday, August 4th. You can listen to a preview of the other songs off the album on NPR’s First Listen here, and it has the staples of being counted among his best work to date by many of his fans including me. As usual, he flexes his satirical fingers and wit through out the album.
